Paintings and sculpture

Born in Los Angeles but raised in Rome, Michael Lawrence’s aesthetic palette was shaped by excursions to Etruscan sites, long walks along the Tiber, visits to museums, and Punch and Judy shows in Borghese Park. He was a wide-eyed, curious boy who was enchanted by the musical language of Italy. He held his first exhibition in Rome at the age of ten.

In 1957 his family moved to London. There he developed a passion for the cinema and Charlie Chaplin, which emerges as an acrobatic flight of human spirit in his paintings.

Lawrence attended Bard College in New York and did graduate studies at UCLA. His American career was launched with a series of lithographs and sculptures inspired by James Joyce’s Ulysses.

As his work matured, he developed a unique style he calls ROMANTIC EXPRESSIONISM. His paintings and sculptures marry a naïve use of structure to abstract composition.

Since 1992, Michael Lawrence has lived and worked in Europe, making his studio on the island of Hydra, in Greece where he is surrounded by pine trees and bougainvillaea in a place where no cars are allowed, his recent work reflects Greek themes and a landscape of white-washed houses and brilliant colours.
